Brent Hathaway
Mavericks Manager & AA Head Coach
About Brent
Coach Hathaway continues to be one of the most successful American Legion baseball coaches in the Northwest and is now entering his 44th year as a baseball mentor. In 2025 Coach Hath took his Mavericks to the Montana State Tournament for the 33rd consecutive year. The Mavericks won the 2025 state tournament, the 9th time in Coach Hath’s tenure. This championship made it back to back state titles for the Mavericks, the third time it has been accomplished. For the team’s success Coach Hath was named the Montana AA Legion Coach of the Year, his 10th time to be honored.
Coach Hathaway is in his 36th year overall with the Mavericks and his 34th year of coaching the Maverick’s “AA” team. Coach Hathaway is the senior AA coach for the state of Montana. Prior to coming to the Missoula Mavericks Coach Hathaway worked in Idaho and Colorado as a high school and legion coach. Coach Hathaway began coaching the Missoula Mavericks at the “A” level in 1991. In his second season (1992) the team finished 53-18, establishing a Montana American Legion Baseball record for the greatest number of wins by an “A” squad.
That ’92 Hathaway-coached team won the Maverick’s first-ever “A” conference crown. The team went on to finish second in both the state and regional tournaments. Coach Hathaway was named as the Montana American Legion Class “A” “Coach of the Year”. The following year, 1993, Coach Hathaway was hired as manager and “AA” head coach for the program.
In ’94 Coach Hathaway’s “AA” Mavericks won a state-record 73 games (73-16), while winning the Montana State Tournament and finishing second in the Northwest Regional tournament, one win away from a berth to the American Legion World Series.
After that banner season of ’94, Coach Hathaway was selected as the “AA” Montana American Legion Coach of the Year, as well as USA Baseball “Topps” Baseball Coach of the Year. “Hath” is the only coach in Montana history to receive “Coach of the Year” awards at both the “A” and “AA” levels.
The 1995 Mavericks posted a perfect 24-0 Western Conference record—making them the first and only Montana American Legion baseball team to go undefeated in league play. The ’95 Mavericks won the Montana State Tournament for the second consecutive year while posting an impressive 61-11 record.
In 1997 and ’98 “Hath’s” Mavericks again won back-to-back state championships while posting a combined overall record of 117-33 and a conference mark of 39-9. “Hath” was selected as the 1998 “AA” Coach of the Year, the third time he had been so honored. The ‘99 Mavericks played for the “Three-Peat”, falling just short in a championship game loss to Lethbridge, Alberta.
The Mavericks played for the state championship again in 2003 and 2006, finishing second to the three-time state champion Helena Senators and the Billings Scarlets respectively. In 2004 and 2007 the Mavericks won their 10th and 11th Western Conference Championships in 15 seasons by posting 20-4 marks, the 6th time one of “Hath’s” teams won 20 or more conference games. In 2016 “Hath’s” Mavericks did it again going 20-2 for the conference title and a seventh 20-win title. The 2010 Mavericks set an all-time winning percentage mark for the program (.857) by finishing 66-11 overall and a conference championship record of 17-3. The offense for this 2010 club broke many other long standing records including homeruns (75), triples (65), RBI’s (688), runs scored (812), and hits (930). A 3rd place finish at the Northwest Regional Tournament was the conclusion to this dream season. In 2017 the Mavericks won their 7th state title under Hath and finished the year with a runner up finish in the Northwest Regionals. The Mavericks entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a one run lead against the Lewis-Clark Twins only to see their dream of qualifying for the American Legion World Series disappear by a Twins comeback win. The Mavericks have now competed for the state title in thirteen of the thirty-three seasons “Hath” has been at the helm.
In 1994, 1998, and 1999 “Hath’s” teams have been awarded the “A.P. Anderson Sportsmanship Award”, presented annually by the Montana Umpires Association. In 2001 they were awarded the team sportsmanship award of the “AA” state tournament.
In Coach Hathaway’s thirty-three-year tenure as the Maverick’s AA manager his teams have compiled an overall record of 1645 wins to 825 losses. During that time span the Maverick’s won nine state titles, finished as runner-up four times, and were 523 -195 in conference play, winning 18 conference championships. Coach Hathaway’s record during his 35 years of coaching the Mavericks at the “A” and “AA” level is 1714 wins and 868 losses. More importantly, Coach Hathaway continues to produce players that have earned the opportunity to play at the collegiate and professional levels. Currently the Mavericks have had one of their players selected in the MLB amateur draft for three out of the past fourteen years, an accomplishment no other team in Montana can match. The young men that have played for “Hath” the past thirty-three AA seasons have played in 184 collegiate baseball programs and eight professional organizations.
Coach Hathaway played collegiate baseball at the University of Idaho and at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is a native of Moscow, Idaho, where he was a standout athlete at Moscow High School and was his school’s “Athlete of the Year” in 1978. He lettered four times in baseball and was his high school’s starting quarterback in his junior and senior year.
